Maggie (Anne Hathaway) es una mujer independiente que ha decidido vivir sin ataduras. Pero conoce a Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal), un joven cuyo irresistible encanto funciona no sólo con las mujeres, sino también dentro del despiadado mundo de las ventas farmacéuticas. La relación entre Maggie y Jamie, para sorpresa de ambos, desemboca en amor. El film se basa en una historia real: la de Jamie Reidy, un vendedor de Pfizer (empresa farmaceútica que puso a la venta la Viagra) que sacó a la luz algunas de las prácticas de las compañías farmacéuticas.
